Welcome Foundation is dedicated to helping those fleeing war and persecution and seeking a safe place to live for themselves and their children.

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries.
Without them humanity cannot survive.
— Dalai Lama

Welcome Foundation is a non-profit organization formed in response to the massive movement of refugees across Europe which is currently occurring, the largest since World War II. One million people crossed into Europe in 2015, many through the Eastern Mediterranean route, more than half landing on Greek shores from Turkey (UNHCR, 2016). Of these, approximately 40% are children. There are many families, and a large number have multiple children. The largest numbers of refugees are from Syria, followed by Afghanistan, and Iraq. The war in Syria has been going on for 5 years. Cities have been destroyed and people have lost their homes, their jobs,  children have lost their schools. Many have lost their lives. The situation has become so bad that people who had good lives before the war, have decided to pack up their children and make a perilous journey in search of safety.

These people deserve our compassion and our help. Welcome Foundation strives to alleviate some of this suffering and support human dignity for those on this very difficult, and potentially deadly, road. We believe many people across the globe would like to help, and we ask you to join us, and act on the compassion we know you have.

The situation for refugees in Greece changed significantly in March 2016. As a result of the EU-Turkey deal, what were ‘hotspots’ for refugee registration turned into locked detention centers, where new arrivals are housed and possibly returned to Turkey. Europe has closed its borders and some 65,000 refugees are unable to go forward from Greece for the foreseeable future. Camps run by the Greek Government are being erected for those already in the country, scattered over mainland Greece. Greece, a country already crippled economically, is baring a heavy burden.

As this new reality continues to take shape, we are continuing to assess the needs and determine where and how Welcome Foundation can be of help. Our focus continues to be reducing the suffering and maintaining the dignity of the refugees seeking safety.

Welcome Foundation partners with U.S. non-profits, Greek non-profits and local Greek groups working on the ground. We are determined to make a difference and you can too. Join us.

The current Refugee Crisis does not appear to be nearing an end. The need far exceeds what the large NGOs, Greek government, and Greek people themselves have been able to provide. We can help to fill the gap. Let us show compassion.
